YARRA TREE WORKS PERMITS

Tree Works Permits

Yarra has a Significant Tree Register 2014 to help ensure that unique, historical, rare and environmentally important trees are not removed or lopped without Council’s approval.
The register covers trees located on private properties, as well as those in local parks, gardens and other public land across Yarra.
You can view the location of trees on the Significant Tree Register via the Significant Tree Register map. To navigate the map:
  • Choose the 'Significant Tree Register' link on the left side of the screen (under 'Public Open Space')
  • Click on the pink dots to view details of trees on the register
  • Zoom in and out using the magnifying glass icons at the top left of the screen
What is a Significant Tree?
A tree is considered significant if:
  • It has a trunk that is 400mm or wider from a point of 1.5 metres above ground level
  • It has multiple trunks equaling 400mm
  • It is listed on Council's Significant Tree Register
Use the following formula to calculate the diameter of the tree trunk: Diameter = Tree Circumference divided by 3.14159. For example, if your tree, at a height of 1500mm, is 1256mm around (the circumference) then it is approximately 400mm in diameter (1256mm divided by 3.14159 = approximately 400mm).

If a tree overhangs into a neighbouring property, the owner or resident of the neighbouring property is allowed to prune the tree, as long as they do not kill or destabilise the tree.

A permit is required from Council to remove or lop branches from a tree listed on the Significant Tree Register and deemed significant under the Local Law.
